Why do I need to get my pet vaccinated?

Vaccinations help protect your pet against viruses and diseases in our environment. Without the proper immunizations, your pet is at a much higher risk of coming down with a serious illness. We will perform a complete physical examination to determine the health of your pet and to identify any problems before they become serious. How often should I bring my pet in for a wellness examination?

We recommend annual examinations unless your pet has specific health issues that need to be monitored more frequently, such as arthritis and kidney or heart disease.

Why does my indoor cat need to be on a heartworm preventive?

Heartworm disease is spread via mosquitoes and even though your cat remains indoors, mosquitoes can still find a way into your home. Recent studies have found that the species of mosquito most commonly found indoors is also more likely to be carrying heartworm disease. Heartworm disease can become fatal in cats, and unlike dogs, there is no effective treatment so prevention is crucial.

Should I bring my cat in even if he/she isn’t showing any signs of illness?

Cats are excellent at hiding an illness or problem. Bloom Animal Hospital will perform regular nose to tail physical examinations and routine blood and urine tests to make sure your cat isn’t hiding any issues that can affect them in the long run.

I am worried about having surgery done on my dog/cat. What do you do to increase the safety of anesthesia?

With any surgical procedure comes risks but our staff is equipped to greatly minimize those risks. We’ll first examine your pet to determine if they have any pre-existing conditions that might be a problem with anesthesia. We then perform blood tests to evaluate the internal organs, such as the liver and kidney.
